Apple AM Support COA Week 2012
Tracey Smith, one of our Friday and Sunday evening presenters, is a child of an alcoholic and also a very proud Trustee for the National Association for Children of Alcoholics, NACOA.org.uk.
A few years ago, she helped co-found COA (Children of Alcoholics) Week, which this year takes place between the 12th and 18th February.
Apple AM : Taunton Hospital Radio have proudly supported this Bristol based charity in previous years, raising awareness of their website and helpline. This year, with the engineering and presenting assistance of Simon West (also of Friday and Sunday night fame) they've produced two powerful public service announcements (PSAs) to broadcast on Apple AM.
The PSAs were written by Tracey and draw from some personal experience. She explained, 'When mum passed away, I got involved with NACOA and wanted to share some of my solutions for coping with the volatility of being a COA. It's a very tricky one to deal with, particularly when you are very young.'
She added, 'Some of the callers to the helpline are as young as 7-years old and they ring with all sorts of problems, including drinking too much themselves. NACOA is a vital resource that has no budget for marketing. I'm hoping the PSAs Simon and I made will be widely circulated and that news of the awareness campaign will spread across the country, reaching the hundreds of thousands of COAs who don't yet know NACOA exists'.
